QUARTERLY NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

The John and Magadaline Malaski Kurkowski family has been named the 2009 Heritage Family of the Year by the Shoreview Historical Society. In 1887, the family purchased land in Mounds View township (now part of Shoreview) and raised 10 children.

Andrew Kurkowski, the seventh child, and his family lived on the original farm on County Road E, east of Victoria. Many descendents remained in the area and became involved in government, healthcare, recreation and public works. Shoreview's first mayor, Ken Hanold, married Victoria Kurkowski, John's granddaughter.

A reception and a program honoring the family is planned for Sunday, April 19th, 2:00 - 4:00 in the Shoreview Community Center.

SHS suggests you consider purchasing Shoreview Reflections as a gift. The book, a history of Shoreview and the early settlements that preceeded it, has an accompanying DVD that includes interviews with seniors reflecting on the early growth of the city. The book costs $20 when purchased alone, and the DVD sells for $15. When purchased together it's a bargain price of $25. Shoreview Reflections may be purchased at City Hall, the Chickadee Boutique, and other local business sites - or by contacting any SHS board member.

Shoreview Makes Top 10
Shoreview made history of a sort when it was selected in August by Family Circle magazine as one of the nation's top 10 cities in which to raise a family.
